Fire Island Lighthouse

Approaching the Fire Island Lighthouse is like taking a step back in time. Once a crumbling structure due to neglect and vandalism, the The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society gave the structure a much-needed face lift, restoring its legacy. The renovation process, which took place in the 1980s, not only captured the imagination of Fire Islanders, but it drew the attention of people as far as Hollywood; the Fire Island lighthouse was featured in several films, including the blockbuster hit Men in Black II. And while it's true the lighthouse is not "original," its unique charm remains intact. Housed between the walls of the 167-foot structure are the documents, photographs and treasures of Fire Island. Visitors can take a guided tour through the lighthouse and learn about Fire Island's rich history. The subject of several ghost stories and supernatural tales, the light house has had its share of eerie happenings. It has even been the site of several paranormal investigations. But the residents of Fire Island refuse to keep visitors in the dark; they eagerly share the legends of Fire Island. In fact, lantern tours and ghost stories are usually offered on Lighthouse Terrace in the month of October. In order to reach the light, visitors can take Exit 53 on the Long Island Expressway. Follow the signs to Robert Moses Park. Tours of the lighthouse are conducted several times each month, weather permitting. Due to limited spots, visitors may have to call in advance. Call 516-661-4876 to make a reservation.
