Fire Island to get new sand by summerBy The Associated Press

Fire Island beaches will get nearly 2 million cubic feet of new sand by this summer. Sen. Charles Schumer and Reps. Tim Bishop and Steve Israel announced an agreement with the National Park Service for the beach renourishment program. The program will affect communities including Davis Park, Fire Island Pines, Ocean Beach and Seaview. The new sand should help protect 10,000 Fire Island homeowners from erosion caused by severe storms.
